Soup: a sensitive medium

Liquid feed systems have many advantages: practicality, savings, performance… but soup can potentially provide an ideal medium for undesirable micro-organism development, which can have a harmful effect on breeding performance.

One gram of soup can contain between 10,000 and 10,000,000 micro-organisms: lactic acid bacteria, yeasts, but also enteropathogens. The presence of water and cereal substrate makes this an ideal medium to support fermentation.

Main risks are:

The development of pathogenic bacteria (enteropathogens e.g. coli, Clostridium etc…), and is a main factor in mortality during the fattening period (enterotoxemia).
Fermentation by yeasts and undesirable bacteria with the related production of ethanol, acetic acid reduce the palatability of the soup, and the pigs’ feed intake.
Digestive problems during post weaning/fattening period transition.
